I like to seek out mystery whenever I can, to research old mysteries and new. For a few years now I’ve been working with the concept of Yugen in my photography on many occasions and it’s something that of itself is difficult to put into words. In the most basic words it is the sense of mystery one can feel when something is beyond sight or knowing.
When I try to catch Yugen in my shots I rely on shadow and darkness however I’ve recently begun to turn this on it’s head occasionally and use highlight and brightness. Snow and mist are perfect for this. It brings to mind a poem ‘As mad as the mist and snow.’
In this small set of shots I’ve tried to recreate the sense of otherness conjured on this misty day of moorland mystery.
